“Customer Certified” vs. Organic
There are several issues that we see with the organic certification process. The process is very expensive and very time consuming, becoming another difficult extra layer of regulation that makes it hard for small scale agriculture to compete.
In many cases "organic" has become another label to sell a product. There are many certified organic approaches that make us just as uncomfortable as applying chemicals. These issues leave us with the realization that the organic certification is not the right approach for us.
Our idea of healthy, safe food is built upon the foundational belief that the closer our food gets to its natural state, the better it is for us. We embrace this natural approach and hold our practices and improvements up to this standard. We eliminate the harmful uses of chemicals, antibiotics, hormones, and unnatural feeds.
If we were marketing outside of our local area, "certified organic" may be the best guarantee that we could offer. Since we are not marketing outside our local area, we feel that having a relationship with our customers is a better guarantee. We believe in the "know your farmer, know you food" concept. Our "customer certified" approach keeps us personally involved in the marketing process. Through CSA, farmers markets, and our own networking, we are able to maintain a connection with our customers.
The best guarantee we can offer our customers is involvement in the process. We call it “customer certification” in which the farm doors are open to our customers and they certify if the operations meet their standards. We view every person that visits our operation as an inspector. Our commitment to our customers is fresh, quality, safe produce.
